Dear Friends and Neighbors,
As all of you know, I have been spending the majority of my time and energy lately in the Pajaro
community because of the flooding that occurred from the levee break on March 10. These
residents had so little to begin with, and now much of what they had was ruined by floodwaters
— cars, clothing, furniture and other possessions.
Some homes had to be red-tagged due to flood damage, while others were contaminated by
floodwaters. And now in the aftermath, Pajaro residents face overwhelming challenges. Those
who are farmworkers are unable to work, due to the flooding that prevents the fields from being
planted for the next several months because of pathogens and contaminants.
Monterey County has provided temporary shelter, legal aid, debris clean-up, mental health
services and more to the residents. Monterey County is also coordinating with local nonprofits
which are providing essential food, clothing and even hot meals to the returned residents.
Over 70% of the residents are renters. With the destruction of their property and loss of income,
they are in an extremely vulnerable position. I supported and strengthened a temporary halt to
evictions for those who have been impacted by the floods. There is a moratorium on evictions
until July 31 for those who provide written notice they have been financially impacted.
We are now waiting for the federal government to bring FEMA assistance, which will greatly
increase the relief resources beyond what the state and county can do. However, recovery will be
a long process but Pajaro can be better than it was.
As always, don't hesitate to reach out to my office for assistance. You can reach us at 831-755-5022 or district2@co.monterey.ca.us.
Sincerely,
Glenn Church
District 2 Supervisor
