Crazy Horse Transfer Station Plans

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

Plans are moving forward for the creation of the Crazy Horse Transfer Station at the former Crazy Horse Landfill. The landfill closed many years ago, but the Board of Directors of Salinas Valley Recycles (also known as the Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority) has been very supportive of my efforts to reopen the landfill as a transfer station.

The design for the transfer station has been approved and a cost is now being determined. The transfer station’s fees will be equal to those of the Johnson Canyon Landfill, which are the lowest in the area. Opening is scheduled for the second half of 2026.

When the Crazy Horse Landfill closed, traffic was becoming an issue on Crazy Horse Canyon Road. Vehicles from Salinas would back up on the northbound lane. Efforts are being made to avoid this by developing a long, dedicated lane for a left turn into the transfer station. In this scenario, Crazy Horse Canyon Road would be widened so vehicles can easily pass those in line who are waiting for a left turn.

On the southbound lane, a dedicated right turn lane will enter the landfill. To make left and right turns convenient, entrance into the landfill will have two lanes. Each entry (left or right turning vehicles) will have its own dedicated lane to reduce back up of vehicles. This was a late addition to the plans as I requested it. It is not shown in the current design but will be added soon.

The transfer station will make disposing of household and yard waste much easier and less costly than going to Madison Lane in Salinas or ReGen in Marina for both Salinas and North County residents.

As always, don't hesitate to reach out to my office for assistance. You can reach us at 831-755-5022 or district2@countyofmonterey.gov.
